Taking your dog or cat to the Netherlands from the UK: dated AHC timeline
Whether you fly, take Eurotunnel via France, or travel on a direct North Sea ferry, the Netherlands follows standard EU pet-entry rules. Enter your travel date below to get the exact dates to book, worked out backward from your trip.
Entry requirements for pets travelling to the Netherlands
- Your pet needs an ISO-compliant microchip implanted before their rabies vaccination.
- The rabies vaccination must be at least 21 clear days old before you travel, so the first day your pet is eligible to travel is day 22 after the injection.
- The AHC must be issued by an Official Vet (OV) no more than 10 days before you travel.
- No inbound tapeworm treatment is required to enter the Netherlands. That requirement only applies to Finland, Ireland, Malta and Norway.
- Dogs do still need a vet-administered tapeworm treatment 24-120 hours before crossing back into the UK. This applies on every return route, including from the Netherlands.

Netherlands โ frequently asked questions
Does my dog need tapeworm treatment to enter the Netherlands?
No. The Netherlands does not require tapeworm treatment before arrival, but your dog still needs a vet-administered tapeworm treatment 24-120 hours before you return to the UK.
Can I take my pet to the Netherlands via Eurotunnel or a North Sea ferry?
Yes. Eurotunnel Le Shuttle via France and direct North Sea ferry routes such as Hull-Rotterdam or Harwich-Hook of Holland carry pets under the same AHC and rabies-vaccination terms as flying.
When should I book my AHC appointment before travel to the Netherlands?
Your Official Vet must issue the AHC no more than 10 days before you travel. AHC Ready recommends booking within an 8-day window before travel, which leaves a 2-day safety buffer.
